Even if you’ve been to the San Diego Zoo plenty of times, there are still probably hidden treasures of the park that you don’t even know about! Some of these exhibits are just not as popular to the masses, and some are literally a bit hidden in the park, but all of them should be on your list for your next trip to the zoo.
Here’s our list:
Children’s Zoo
The Children’s Zoo is a great part of the park to visit, especially if you want to get close to the animals. The petting Paddock in the Children’s Zoo allows you to pet bunnies goats pigs and more! The Children’s Zoo recently underwent a remodel and includes a mouse house made of bread, an otter grotto, and even bird egg incubators.
Hummingbird Hut
Near the reptile house there is a large collection of bromeliads that are wonderful to look at all on their own. But tucked away beyond the beautiful foliage is a very special little old building. It is a special house just for hummingbirds, and as you push through the plastic chain barriers to get inside, you will begin to see the hummingbirds buzz right by your head.
El Condor Pasa
If seeing a bird like an Andean Condor sounds amazing, taking the high road to the El Condor Pasa. This group of birds are located in their own aviaries on a bridge between Ituri Forest and Polar Plunge, and because of its location, you may even get the view to yourself.
Beyond the Reptile House
Most anyone who has been to the San Diego Zoo, has visited The Reptile House, but many people don’t realize what’s beyond The Reptile House. In fact, there are amazing animals to be seen beyond the Reptile House, like giant tortoises, geckos, frogs, and gators!
Orchid Greenhouses
If you are lucky enough to be visiting the Zoo on the third Friday of the month, you’ll get the chance to view the orchid greenhouses. There is no extra admission, and they are open from 10 am to 2 pm. These greenhouses are filled with a very impressive and beautiful spread of orchids, and are a must see for any flower enthusiast.
Next time you visit the San Diego Zoo, hopefully there is a new animal, a new path, or a new experience awaiting you!
